Answers

  • What subjects and grade levels do you offer?
A Beka Book has a complete academic program for nursery through grade 12.

  • Do you sell materials designed especially for home schoolers?
For kindergarten through grade 6, we offer home school lesson plans, and home school charts and games to add interest to the teaching. In grades 7 and 8 we offer Parent Guides to Curriculum and Record Keeping, and in high school, several English and math courses include home school daily lesson plans for the student.

  • What are curriculum/lesson plans?
Curriculum/ Lesson Plans help you make the best use of your valuable teaching time by giving complete day-by-day lesson plans for the entire year. These plans are correlated with the textbooks (purchased separately) and are designed to be of help to you in organizing your teaching. Thousands of parents and schools around the world successfully use the A Beka Book curriculums, which are based on sound scholarship, common sense, and the Word of God.

  • Why should I buy the curriculum/lesson plans?
Our lesson plans save you hours of time in teacher preparation, and they cover important concepts and oral review that cannot be practiced in a workbook.

  • What grade level should I choose for my child?
Request a Scope and Sequence (or download it here). This lists each grade level by subject and tells what students will learn for that year. A Beka is designed for normal, average children; therefore, we recommend keeping your child on grade level if possible. The materials review, and with the one-on-one teaching you are giving your child, you can adjust for his specific needs.

  • If I order the child and parent kit will I have everything I need for the year?
Yes, the child and parent kits include everything necessary to complete a full school year. Optional items listed with the recommended lists in our catalog and mentioned in the lesson plans may be purchased to enhance the course, and A Beka Book provides many additional teaching aids and charts you may wish to order.

  • What is the difference between teacher keys, editions, and guides?
Teacher Keys are simply the student text with answers. Teacher Editions contain the student text with answers, a scope and sequence for the book, and sample beginning lesson plans. Teacher Guides contain answers to the text questions, scope and sequence for the book, and lesson plans for the entire book, but are not copies of the student texts.

  • Do I need the Teacher Editions to the readers?
On the elementary level, A Beka Book has designed the reading books to include all the information a home schooler would need. Discussion and comprehension questions are included after most of the selections and vocabulary words are noted. The Teacher Editions contain a copy of the student book with answers to questions. Teacher Editions for the high school literature books include a copy of the student text, a scope and sequence for the course, and answers to questions in the text.

  • Do you have products for special learning needs?
We do not have anything specifically designed for special learning needs; however many parents of special needs children do use our materials. You would need to select the level you feel would be best for your child, and make adjustments to the curriculum pacing, etc. as needed. See our Scope and Sequence for help in determining level.

  • How does A Beka Book teach phonics?
A Beka Book materials work together to give a thorough, enjoyable, and highly teachable phonics approach to reading. Instruction is presented in six easy steps: short vowels, consonants, blends, one-vowel words, long vowels and the two-vowel rule, and special phonics sounds.

  • What does my high school student need to graduate?
You generally need a math, science, English, and history class for each year. Contact your local school district to determine your state's requirements for home schooling.

  • When do you teach creative writing skills?
The A Beka program incorporates creative writing in the seatwork, language, and penmanship materials.

  • Can I use your foreign language courses for my elementary child?
The A Beka foreign languages are written as high school elective classes, so we would not recommend them before grade 7.

  • Do you have "hands-on" science?
Abundant activities are included within the elementary student texts to give a hands-on understanding of scientific principles.

  • How do I meet lab requirements for high school science?
Laboratory manuals provide detailed plans for doing science labs. You may either purchase the lab equipment yourself or use our DVD lab demonstrations.

  • What is the difference between test and quiz books?
Tests give accumulated evaluation, and quizzes give checkups along the way.

  • What comes in the kits?
For complete kit contents, you may go to our online order form. If you do not have an account number, log in as a guest. After searching by grade level, look for the item called child kit or parent kit and click on the item number.

  • Do you issue a diploma?
