- American Literature—Great American short stories, poems, and other selections are organized by genre and periods to exemplify the specific characteristics of the time period—a great introduction to college literature studies! His eyes will be opened to literary craftsmanship as he traces a theme through Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. Both class discussion and essay questions will build his analytic skills.
- Grammar and Composition—The grammar handbook used in grades 11–12 will become an invaluable resource, even in college! It provides a complete treatment of the elements necessary for effective writing and correct grammar. Eleventh graders work on college-prep writing assignments in research, essays, and literary analysis.
- Vocabulary, Spelling, Poetry—The emphasis on the origin of vocabulary words; word analysis through the study of prefixes, roots, and suffixes; and word analogies is an education in itself! In addition to 144 vocabulary words, your teen will learn more than 1,000 synonyms and antonyms. Through joining his video classmates in memorizing Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” and 8 other poems, your teen will be inspired by great ideas presented in great language.
Your teen will gain lifelong benefits from these lessons as he is inspired to grow in knowledge and skills by a master teacher, who provides clear explanations. As your teen becomes more acquainted with his video classmates, he will feel as though he is a part of the class. The teacher will even pause to allow “classmates watching” opportunity to participate.
The prerecorded online video streaming or DVDs give you the flexibility to set your own daily schedule.The video lease provides you with a full 12 months to complete the 170 lessons, which take 40–50 minutes of viewing time each. You also have the option to purchase either the tuition and books or tuition only (for those who may already have some of the materials and wish to purchase individual items separately). Both options include the assessment materials, a video manual to help you stay on track with the video teacher, and record-keeping progress reports to document progress through the school year.
Abeka Academy also offers the option of Independent Study, in which you keep your teen’s academic records, or our Accredited Program. Our Accredited Program does not cost a penny more and provides official report cards, an official transcript, and free standardized testing.
