By providing your teen an excellent education in language studies, you are giving him vital skills for his life’s calling. The benefits of learning to communicate well cannot be overstated! The Abeka English program is known for excellence in its systematic study of grammar and composition, vocabulary, and inspiring literature.
- English Literature—Class discussion and essay questions over the great works by English authors will prepare your senior for college literature studies while building his analytic skills. The course is a chronological study from the Anglo-Saxon period starting with Beowulf to Pygmalion in the twentieth century. A highlight is the reading and discussion of Macbeth and Pilgrim’s Progress.
- Grammar and Composition—This year’s study provides practice with parallelism, clear and logical construction, exactness and vividness, agreement, and other habits of a good writer. Basic review over parts of speech, punctuation, and capitalization helps your teen stay sharp and ready for college work!
- Vocabulary, Poetry—Watch your teen’s vocabulary and thinking skills soar as he studies the origin of words; word analysis through prefixes, roots, and suffixes; and word analogies! In addition to the 144 vocabulary words, more than 1,000 synonyms, antonyms, and related words are part of this year’s study. Your teen will be inspired as he memorizes 10 poems, including Donne’s “Death Be Not Proud.”
Your senior will gain lifelong benefits from these lessons as he is challenged to grow in knowledge and skills by a master teacher, who provides clear explanations. As your teen becomes more acquainted with his video classmates, he will feel as though he is a part of the class. The teacher will even pause to allow “classmates watching” opportunity to participate.
The prerecorded online video streaming or DVDs give you the flexibility to set your own daily schedule. The video lease provides you with a full 12 months to complete the 170 lessons, which take 40–50 minutes of viewing time each. You also have the option to purchase either the tuition and books or tuition only (for those who may already have some of the materials and wish to purchase individual items separately). Both options include the assessment materials, a video manual to help you stay on track with the video teacher, and record-keeping progress reports to document progress through the school year.
Abeka Academy also offers the option of Independent Study, in which you keep your teen’s academic records, or our Accredited Program. Our Accredited Program does not cost a penny more and provides official report cards, an official transcript, and free standardized testing. It also gives you the option to choose digital assessments. With either option, academic assistance is only a phone call or an e-mail away.
