Erupting Pumpkins and Color Mixing Homeschool Science Experiment

Turn ordinary pumpkins into a bubbling, colorful fall homeschool science experiment! This fun and hands-on activity is perfect for lessons or weekend family fun. Children will love watching their mini pumpkins erupt with bright colors while learning about chemical reactions using simple household ingredients.

Materials

  • Mini pumpkins
  • Baking soda
  • Food coloring
  • Dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Cooking tray or pan

Steps

Step 1: Using a knife, carefully cut a circle around the stem of each mini pumpkin to create a small opening.

Step 2: Scoop out the seeds and pulp with a spoon (or your hands if you don’t mind getting a little messy!).

Step 3: Place your pumpkin on a tray or pan to catch any overflow. Add 2–3 spoonfuls of baking soda into the hollow pumpkin.

Step 4: Squeeze in about 12 drops of dish soap—this helps make the “lava” extra foamy and fun!

Step 5: Add a few drops of food coloring—try mixing orange, red, and yellow for a fiery look, or get creative with your students’ favorite colors.

Step 6: Slowly pour in vinegar a little at a time and watch the colorful eruption begin! Keep adding more baking soda and vinegar to keep the reaction going.

It’s a good experiment for primary school student they like to do it and it is also safe for use.
