Homeschooling Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All: How to Adapt Abeka for Your Family

t’s not too late to make a change: Switch up homeschool!

One of the inherent benefits of homeschooling is its flexibility. Homeschool is about finding the right way for your family and your needs, not fitting into someone else’s idea of what school should look like. That means you’re free to evolve, and as you recognize ways to improve your approach, you can (and should) do it.

Plenty of homeschool families kick off their year with one approach, then find themselves making changes as needed. Whether you started out the year with Abeka’s parent-led curriculum, our Abeka Academy Video Lessons, or a mixture of both — if it’s not working, it’s not too late to make a change.

And even better, we’re here to help you navigate how that will work! Let’s start with what to expect through different scenarios of change.

Switching to Video Lessons

If you’ve tried Parent-Led Book Kits and the approach isn’t for you, Abeka Academy Video Lessons may be the comprehensive support you’re looking for—it’s our premier online video solution that does the heavy lifting for you!

Abeka Academy is a time-tested, research-based learning experience at home. Video lessons are filmed in real classrooms where our Master Teachers lead students’ lessons. On-screen, students ask questions and interact with the teacher. So from wherever your child is sitting, they will feel as if they’re part of the class too.

Abeka Academy Video Lessons can be done as a full-grade, full-year program, or you can choose video lessons by subject with our Single-Subject options. Looking for even more flexibility? You can also get access to specific video lessons or blocks of hours with Video on Demand.

Accredited vs. Independent Study

Abeka Academy’s accredited option helps parents keep track of their child’s progress by reviewing and grading their work and providing official documents such as report cards, transcripts, and diplomas upon graduation. Abeka Academy Accredited students are also eligible to walk at our yearly graduation ceremonies in Pensacola, Florida.

In some situations, choosing accredited will help meet state or college-entry requirements more easily. Keeping up with all of this might sound overwhelming, but don’t worry — Abeka provides all the necessary materials to submit everything successfully, including an easy-to-use, online dashboard with due dates, test dates, and quiz dates.

Homeschool families who choose Independent Study Video Instruction will still receive all of the materials and videos needed to homeschool, but they will have more flexibility over schedules, reports, and deadlines associated with their child’s education.

With this option, you’re not required to submit anything to Abeka, and you have the freedom to create a schedule that works best for your family. However, you will also be responsible for keeping track of your child’s studies, grades, and other necessary documents, and you will still need to finish within 12 months of enrollment.

Switching to a Parent-Led Approach

If you’ve opted for a structured, full-year, full-grade approach, it’s not uncommon to find yourself wanting more freedom. Freedom is different for each family. It may be defined as a more flexible daily schedule, or you may prefer to be more involved in teaching your children.

A parent-led approach may work best.

What does “parent-led” mean? Well, in broad terms, it means you’re the teacher. You lead the lessons and handle the grading, just like a teacher would. At Abeka, we provide an array of kits for parents to choose from. Kits help guide parents and their children through each subject and lesson — we even provide a script if you want to use it.

Parents who have opted for this approach say it typically takes three to four hours to complete all the subjects and lessons required in a given day. If you’d like a firsthand look into the day in the life of parent-led homeschool moms, read how Kara Cunningham, an Abeka mom of multiples, handles her daily routine.
