Mary and Baby Jesus Ornament Craft
Create a beautiful and simple Nativity ornament for your Christmas tree! Crafting a Mary and Baby Jesus ornament lets your homeschooler get into the Christmas spirit. It offers a meaningful hands-on activity that ties in with the true reason for the season. See full instructions below!
Needed Materials:
☐ Blue and white construction paper
☐ White cardstock paper
☐ Scissors
☐ Two pieces of blue and white yarn
☐ Colored pencils or crayons
☐ Glue
☐ Hole puncher
☐ Googly eyes (optional)
Instructions:
Step 1:
Place the white construction paper vertically on your workspace. Cut the paper in half lengthwise.
Step 2:
Place the blue construction paper horizontally on your workspace, making it wider than it is tall.
Step 3:
Fold the blue construction paper and the white cut piece of paper into an accordion shape (like a fan).
Step 4:
Turn the two pieces of paper vertically on your workspace.
Step 5:
Keep the blue paper folded like an accordion and fold it in half. There should be a hole at the top, which will be Mary’s ‘head.’ Glue the folded sections together near the bottom. Hold them in place with a clothespin or clip until the glue dries.
Step 6:
Repeat this process with the smaller white piece of paper.
Step 7:
Punch a hole at the top of the fold on the blue paper using a hole puncher.
Step 8:
Thread a piece of blue yarn through the hole and tie it, leaving enough yarn at the top to hang the ornament.
Step 9:
Squeeze the top of the blue accordion and tie another small piece of blue yarn close to the top to form a ‘neck.’ Cut off any extra yarn.
Step 10:
Repeat this process with the white piece of paper, using a white piece of yarn.
Step 11:
Take your white cardstock paper and trace and cut out two small circles for the faces. Add a small rectangular tab at the top of each circle to glue the faces in place later.
Step 12:
Draw a face on each of the circles. If you prefer, glue on googly eyes
Step 13:
Fold the tab over on each face, apply glue to the back of the tab, and attach each face to the opening at the top of the ornaments. Adjust the yarn ‘neck’ if needed to make the faces fit.
Step 14:
Glue the small white ornament to the blue one by placing a drop onto the back of the ‘neck’ tie. It should look as if Mary is holding Baby Jesus. Let it dry completely.
Now you have a beautiful Nativity ornament you and your kids will love creating together! Hang it on your Christmas tree, and you can even start the tradition of making an ornament once a year as an extra fun project for the family.
